The standard commentary on Sahih Muslim, an-Nawawi explains each hadith with its linguistic meanings, fiqh rulings, and the positions of the four schools. He also provides valuable discussions on hadith methodology, narrator biographies, and points of scholarly consensus and disagreement. This work complemented his Minhaj at-Talibin in fiqh to form the core of Shafi'i scholarship.
