The most influential intermediate work on hadith terminology and methodology, synthesizing the earlier works of al-Hakim and al-Khatib into a comprehensive textbook. Nearly every subsequent work on hadith sciences was either a commentary, summary, or expansion of this text. An-Nawawi's Taqrib is its most famous abridgment.
