A comprehensive work on usul al-fiqh by the great Yemeni mujtahid ash-Shawkani. The author surveys all major positions in legal theory across the schools, evaluates them critically, and argues for the strongest view based on evidence. Ash-Shawkani advocates for ijtihad over taqlid throughout the work, making it both a textbook of legal theory and a manifesto for evidence-based jurisprudence. It remains widely studied in Islamic universities.
