A major biographical dictionary of the companions that synthesized and improved upon the earlier works of Ibn Abd al-Barr and Abu Nu'aym. Ibn al-Athir arranged entries alphabetically and added critical analysis. Together with al-Isabah, it forms the definitive reference for companion studies.
