أَخْبَرَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَيَسْكُتُ سَكْتَتَيْنِ : إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، وَإِذَ
ا فَرَغَ مِنْ الْقِرَاءَةِ "، فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ، فَكَتَبُوا إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنْ قَدْ صَدَقَ سَمُرَةُ. قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد : كَانَ قَتَادَةُ يَقُولُ : ثَلَاثُ سَكَتَاتٍ، وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ الْمَرْفُوعِ سَكْتَتَانِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to have two pauses of silence: one when he entered the prayer, and one when he finished the recitation. Imran ibn Husain denied this, so they wrote to Ubayy ibn Kab, who wrote back that Samurah was correct.
