English Translation
It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: 'The day of Ashura was a day that Quraysh used to fast in the pre-Islamic era. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, he fasted it and commanded fasting it. When Ramadan was made obligatory, Ramadan became the obligatory fast, and the day of Ashura was abandoned. Whoever wished fasted it, and whoever wished left it.'
