حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ عَمْرٍو سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ { هُوَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَى أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابًا مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ } قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعُوذُ بِوَجْهِكَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ { أَوْ مِنْ
تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِكُمْ } قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعُوذُ بِوَجْهِكَ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ { أَوْ يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ } قَالَ هَذِهِ أَهْوَنُ وَأَيْسَرُ

English Translation
Sufyan narrated to us, from 'Amr, who heard Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) [say]: When the verse was revealed: 'He is capable of sending punishment upon you from above you' [6:65], the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I seek refuge in Your Face.' When 'or from beneath your feet' was revealed, he said: 'I seek refuge in Your Face.' When 'or to cover you with confusion in party strife' was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'This is easier' — or: 'This is less severe.'
