English Translation

ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us: my father narrated to me: Dāwūd — meaning Ibn Abī Hind — narrated to us, from Abū Ḥarb, that Ṭalḥah narrated to him — and he was among the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ — he said: I came to Madīnah and had no acquaintance there, so I stayed at the Ṣuffah with a man, and between us each day was a mudd of dates. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ prayed one day, and when he finished, a man from the people of the Ṣuffah said: 'O Messenger of Allāh, the dates have burned our stomachs and our garments have torn.' So the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ ascended the pulpit and gave a sermon, then said: 'By Allāh, if I could find bread or meat, I would feed it to you. But you are soon to see — and whoever among you lives to see it — large bowls of food brought to you in the evening, and you will wear garments like the curtains of the Kaʿbah.' He said: My companion and I stayed eighteen days and nights with no food except al-barīr (fruit of the arāk tree), until we came to our brothers from the Anṣār and they shared with us. The best thing we had was those dates.
