قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَوْسًا يَقُولُ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وَفْدِ ثَقِيفٍ فَكُنَّا فِي قُبَّةٍ فَقَامَ مَنْ كَانَ فِيهَا غَيْرِي وَغَيْرَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَسَارَّهُ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ فَاقْتُلْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ قَالَ بَلَى وَلَكِنَّهُ يَقُولُهَا تَعَوّ
ُذًا فَقَالَ رُدَّهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَقُولُوا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَإِذَا قَالُوهَا حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيَّ دِمَاؤُهُمْ وَأَمْوَالُهُمْ إِلَّا بِحَقِّهَا فَقُلْتُ لِشُعْبَةَ أَلَيْسَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ أَظُنُّهَا مَعَهَا وَمَا أَدْرِي

English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from al-Nuʿmān who said: I heard Aws say: I came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ with the delegation of Thaqīf, and we were in a tent. Everyone in it left except me and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. A man came and whispered to him. He said: 'Go and kill him.' Then he said: 'Does he not testify that there is no god but Allāh?' The man said: 'Yes, but he only says it as a refuge.' He said: 'Bring him back.' Then he said: 'I have been commanded to fight people until they say lā ilāha illā Allāh. Once they say it, their blood and wealth are sacred to me except by right.' I said to Shuʿbah: 'Does the hadith not also say: "Does he not testify that there is no god but Allāh and that I am the Messenger of Allāh?"' Shuʿbah said: 'I think it is included, but I am not certain.'
