Hadith #451

English Translation

Yazīd narrated to us, he said: Ḥammād ibn Salamah informed us, he said: ʿAlī ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan who said: ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ passed by Kilāb ibn Umayyah while he was sitting in the seat of the tax collector in Baṣrah. He said: What makes you sit here? He said: Ziyād appointed me over this position. ʿUthmān said to him: Shall I narrate to you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ? He said: Yes. ʿUthmān said: I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: "the Prophet ﷺ of Allāh Dāwūd عليه السلام had an hour during the night in which he would wake his family, saying: 'O family of Dāwūd, arise and pray, for this is an hour in which Allāh answers supplication, except for a sorcerer or a tax collector.'" So Kilāb ibn Umayyah boarded his ship, went to Ziyād, and asked to be relieved of his position, and he was relieved. ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī narrated to us, he said: Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from al-Ḥasan who said: ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ passed by Kilāb ibn Umayyah — and he mentioned the like of it.
