حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ وَقَالَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُطَرِّفًا عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَل
َّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ سَيِّدُ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ السَّيِّدُ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ أَنْتَ أَفْضَلُهَا فِيهَا قَوْلًا وَأَعْظَمُهَا فِيهَا طَوْلًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيَقُلْ أَحَدُكُمْ بِقَوْلِهِ وَلَا يَسْتَجِرَّنَّهُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَوْ الشَّيَاطِينُ

English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, and Ḥajjāj said: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Qatādah — and Ibn Jaʿfar said: I heard Qatādah — from Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbdillāh. Ḥajjāj said in his narration: He said: I heard Muṭarrif, from his father who said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: You are the master of Quraysh. the Prophet ﷺ said: "The Master is Allāh." He said: You are the most excellent of them in speech and the greatest of them in authority. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "Let one of you say what he has to say, and let the Shayṭān not lead him on" — or — "the devils."
