حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدٌ يَعْنِي الْمَقْبُرِيَّ عَنْ أَبِي شُرَيْحٍ الْعَدَوِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِعَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ وَهُوَ يَبْعَثُ الْبُعُوثَ إِلَى مَكَّةَ ائْذَنْ لِي أَيُّهَا الْأَمِيرُ أُحَدِّثْكَ قَوْلًا قَامَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللّ
َهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْغَدَ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْفَتْحِ سَمِعَتْهُ أُذُنَايَ وَوَعَاهُ قَلْبِي وَأَبْصَرَتْهُ عَيْنَايَ حِينَ تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ أَنْ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ مَكَّةَ حَرَّمَهَا اللَّهُ وَلَمْ يُحَرِّمْهَا النَّاسُ فَلَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرِئٍ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ يَسْفِكَ بِهَا دَمًا وَلَا يَعْضِدَ بِهَا شَجَرَةً فَإِنْ أَحَدٌ تَرَخَّصَ لِقِتَالِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهَا فَقُولُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَذِنَ لِرَسُولِهِ وَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لَكُمْ إِنَّمَا أَذِنَ لِي فِيهَا سَاعَةً مِنْ نَهَارٍ وَقَدْ عَادَتْ حُرْمَتُهَا الْيَوْمَ كَحُرْمَتِهَا بِالْأَمْسِ وَلْيُبَلِّغْ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ

English Translation
Ḥajjāj narrated to us, he said: Layth narrated to us, he said: Saʿīd — meaning al-Maqburī — narrated to me, from Abū Shurayḥ al-ʿAdawī, that he said to ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd while he was dispatching forces to Makkah: Permit me, O commander, to tell you a statement that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ delivered the day after the conquest [of Makkah]. My ears heard it, my heart retained it, and my eyes saw him when he spoke. He praised Allāh and extolled Him, then said: "Makkah was made sacred by Allāh, not by people. It is not lawful for any person who believes in Allāh and the Last Day to shed blood in it or to cut down a tree in it. If anyone seeks license from the fighting of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ in it, tell them that Allāh عز وجل permitted His Messenger but did not permit you. He only permitted me in it for one hour of the day, and its sanctity has returned today as it was yesterday. Let those present convey to those absent."
