Hadith #201
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ قَالَ كَانَ فِينَا رَجُلٌ لَمْ تَزَلْ بِهِ أُمُّهُ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ حَتَّى تَزَوَّجَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَتْهُ أَنْ يُفَارِقَهَا فَرَحَلَ إِلَى أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ بِالشَّامِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أُمِّي لَمْ تَزَلْ بِي حَتَّى تَزَوَّجْتُ ثُمَّ أَمَرَتْنِي أ
َنْ أُفَارِقَ قَالَ مَا أَنَا بِالَّذِي آمُرُكَ أَنْ تُفَارِقَ وَمَا أَنَا بِالَّذِي آمُرُكَ أَنْ تُمْسِكَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الْوَالِدُ أَوْسَطُ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ فَأَضِعْ ذَلِكَ الْبَابَ أَوْ احْفَظْهُ قَالَ فَرَجَعَ وَقَدْ فَارَقَهَا

English Translation
It was narrated from Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I will not leave her." He said: "I am not the one who commands you to leave her, nor the one who commands you to stay with her. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'A father is the middle gate of the gates of Paradise — so either preserve that gate or abandon it.'" He said: "He went back but had already divorced her."
