The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Guard yourselves against the Fire even if it is with half a date (in charity).' This hadith is one of the most powerful motivators in Islamic teaching for giving charity. Ibn Uthaymin explains the beauty of this instruction: the Prophet ﷺ did not say 'give a large sum' but started from the minimum — 'even half a date.' This was a practical teaching for all Muslims, regardless of wealth. The reference to the Fire (Hellfire) as motivation is an example of how the Prophet ﷺ balanced warnings and encouragement. Ibn Allan notes that scholars understand 'guard yourself against the Fire' both literally (charity is a shield on the Day of Judgment) and spiritually (the act of giving protects one's heart from miserliness, which leads to sin). The hadith is also evidence that small acts of charity are not to be dismissed — they count before Allah. This connects to the broader Islamic teaching that no good deed, however small, is insignificant.
