This hadith ('Shyness does not bring anything except good') is the core proof-text for the praiseworthy nature of hayaa. Scholars note the grammatical construction uses negation of the exception ('la yati illa') which is the strongest form of generalization in Arabic, meaning hayaa always produces good without exception. Imam al-Nawawi explains that even if shyness sometimes appears to cause a person to withhold speech or action, the ultimate outcome is still goodness because the restraint itself has spiritual benefit. Al-Mubarakpuri and Ibn Hajar both agree this is a general statement about the nature of hayaa as Allah has created it in the believer — it is a divine attribute that was named as one of Allah's Names (al-Hayiyy). Ibn Uthaymin adds that scholars distinguished between shyness from people (which can be blameworthy if it prevents enjoining good) and shyness before Allah (which is always praiseworthy and is its highest form).
