Overview
The oldest and most widespread Sufi order (tariqa), founded by Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (1077-1166 CE) in Baghdad. The Qadiriyya emphasizes the purification of the self through dhikr (remembrance of God), adherence to the Shariah, and spiritual guidance under a shaykh. It spread across the Muslim world from West Africa to Southeast Asia and has millions of adherents today. The order is known for its inclusive approach and its scholars' contributions to both exoteric and esoteric Islamic sciences.
