Introduction: 30 Lessons for Those Who Fast

مقدمة: ثلاثون درسا للصائمين

Thirty Lessons for Those Who Fast is a practical and spiritually enriching guide designed for Muslims observing the fast of Ramadan. Organized as thirty daily lessons — one for each day of the blessed month — the book covers the full spectrum of topics that every fasting Muslim needs to know and reflect upon: the rulings, the etiquettes, the spiritual dimensions, and the practical challenges of fasting.

The fast of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, an obligation established by the Quran: "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you, that you may become righteous." (Al-Baqarah 2:183). The month of Ramadan is described in the hadith as a month in which the gates of paradise are opened, the gates of hellfire are closed, and the devils are chained — and it contains Laylat al-Qadr, a night better than a thousand months (Al-Qadr 97:3).

The lessons in this book address both the external and internal dimensions of fasting. On the external side, the book covers: what breaks the fast and what does not; the rulings on travellers, the sick, the elderly, and pregnant women; making up missed days; voluntary fasting beyond Ramadan; the beginning and ending of the fast; and the night prayers (tarawih). On the internal and spiritual side, the book addresses: sincerity of intention; guarding the tongue, eyes, and ears during the fast; the spiritual purposes of fasting; the connection between fasting and taqwa; the generosity that Ramadan calls for; and the signs of a fast that has been accepted by Allah.

Each lesson is concise and focused, making it easy to read one per day throughout Ramadan. The format ensures that by the end of the month, a fasting Muslim will have covered all the major aspects of the fast — fulfilling the Prophetic instruction to "learn the knowledge of fasting just as you learn the Quran." This book serves as an ideal companion for Muslims seeking to deepen their Ramadan experience year after year.
