الدواء: التوبة ومحبة الله والأسلحة في مواجهة الذنب
If the disease analyzed in Ad-Da' wad-Dawa' is sin and its effects on the heart, the cure that Ibn al-Qayyim prescribes is multidimensional — a combination of repentance, love, knowledge, and specific spiritual practices that together heal the damaged heart and restore its orientation toward Allah.
Repentance (tawbah) is the gateway to all healing, and Ibn al-Qayyim's treatment of it is among the most comprehensive in Islamic literature. He defines sincere repentance as having three necessary conditions: genuine remorse for the sin, cessation of the sin at the moment of repentance, and a firm determination never to return to it. If the sin involved another person's rights, making restitution is a fourth necessary condition. He also addresses the question of whether repentance is accepted after multiple relapses — answering emphatically that Allah's door of repentance is never closed as long as the soul remains in the body, and that no sin is too great for divine forgiveness if the repentance is sincere.
Beyond repentance, Ibn al-Qayyim argues that the most powerful weapon against sin is genuine love of Allah. When the heart truly loves Allah — experiences His names and attributes as realities, feels connected to Him in prayer and dhikr, and finds genuine sweetness in worship — the attractions of sin lose their power. The person who is drunk on love of the Creator is not easily seduced by the passing pleasures of disobedience. This is why Ibn al-Qayyim devotes extensive sections of the book to cultivating love of Allah through reflection on His attributes, his generosity, and the gifts He has given the believer.
The book also presents practical weapons against specific sins. For sins of the eyes, it recommends lowering the gaze and filling the heart with reflection on the hereafter. For sins of the tongue, it recommends silence, remembrance of Allah, and recitation of Quran. For sins of the stomach, it recommends controlling appetite and remembering the accountability on the Day of Judgment. For sins driven by the love of status, it recommends reflection on the insignificance of worldly reputation and the permanence of Allah's judgment. Each prescription is tailored to the specific disease it addresses.
