الإرث والشروح والاستخدام المعاصر
Al-Adhkar has been one of the most continuously used works of Al-Nawawi — which is saying a great deal, given the extraordinary influence of his other works — and its practical orientation has kept it relevant for Muslims across nine centuries and in every part of the world.
The work's influence can be measured partly by the commentaries it has generated. Ibn Allan as-Siddiq (d. 1057 AH) produced the most important classical commentary on al-Adhkar, titled al-Futahat ar-Rabbaniyyah ala al-Adhkar an-Nawawiyyah, a comprehensive explanation of each supplication that adds substantial scholarly content while remaining practically oriented. This commentary is still widely consulted alongside the original text.
In the modern era, al-Albani's authentication work on al-Adhkar — identifying hadiths that he considered weak or fabricated among those Al-Nawawi included — provided a critical assessment that helps contemporary Muslims apply the standard of the sound Sunnah to their dhikr practice. Al-Albani found that the great majority of the formulas in al-Adhkar are soundly authenticated, while a small number have weaknesses that warrant noting.
Contemporary uses of al-Adhkar span a wide range. It is taught as a primary text in Islamic institutions focusing on spiritual formation. It is cited by imams and teachers providing practical guidance on Islamic devotional practice. It is studied privately by Muslims who want to organize their daily dhikr practice around authenticated prophetic formulas. And it is referenced by scholars writing about the relationship between hadith scholarship and Islamic spirituality.
The book's enduring use reflects a fundamental insight of Al-Nawawi: that the dhikr tradition is not merely a collection of pious formulas to be inherited uncritically but a domain of Islamic practice that benefits from the same scholarly care applied to legal rulings. By grounding the dhikr tradition in authenticated hadiths and honest critical assessment, Al-Nawawi created a resource that serves Muslims' spiritual lives while maintaining the integrity of the scholarly tradition.
