السيوطي: العالم الغزير المؤلف وإمام علوم القرآن
Jalal al-Din Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr as-Suyuti (849–911 AH / 1445–1505 CE) is one of the most extraordinary figures in the history of Islamic scholarship — not merely for his intellectual accomplishments but for their sheer quantity. By his own count he produced over five hundred works covering virtually every domain of Islamic learning: Quran exegesis, hadith sciences, jurisprudence, Arabic language and literature, history, biography, theology, and the spiritual sciences. This level of productivity, even accounting for shorter treatises and compilations among the five hundred, is remarkable by any standard.
Born in Cairo to a family of scholarly origin (his father was a Shafi'i scholar), as-Suyuti received the finest education available in 9th-century AH Egypt, studying under the leading scholars of the time in all the major Islamic disciplines. He became a hafiz (one who has memorized the entire Quran) and a hadith scholar of the highest rank, claiming mastery of two hundred thousand hadiths — an assertion that, even allowing for hyperbole, indicates an extraordinary command of the hadith corpus. He was affiliated with the Shafi'i school in jurisprudence and with Ash'ari theology.
As-Suyuti's personal life was not without controversy. His prolific output was sometimes criticized as superficial compilation rather than deep original scholarship, and he had a difficult relationship with some of his scholarly contemporaries. He withdrew from public life in his later years, living in retreat on Rawda Island in Cairo, but continued producing works at a remarkable rate until his death in 911 AH.
Al-Iklil fi Istinbat at-Tanzil (The Crown in Extracting Rulings from the Quran) represents one of his contributions to the genre of 'Ahkam al-Quran' — works dedicated to extracting legal rulings from the Quranic text. This genre was well established by as-Suyuti's time, with important earlier works by al-Jassas (Hanafi), Ibn al-Arabi al-Maliki, and others. As-Suyuti's contribution reflects his characteristic approach: comprehensive collection, careful organization, and broad command of the earlier scholarly tradition.
