Ibn Hajar's methodology in Al-Isabah is the methodology of a master hadith scholar applied to biographical research. Every claim about a companion's identity, biography, or transmitted reports is evaluated using the standard tools of hadith criticism: examination of chains of transmission, assessment of individual narrators, comparison of multiple versions of the same account, and identification of errors arising from confusion of similar names.
His sources span the entire tradition of companion biography and hadith scholarship. He draws on Ibn Sa'd's Tabaqat, Ibn Abd al-Barr's Al-Isti'ab, Ibn al-Athir's Usd al-Ghabah, and dozens of other biographical works. He also draws directly on the major hadith collections — al-Bukhari, Muslim, the four Sunan collections, Ahmad ibn Hanbal's Musnad — and on the less-known but sometimes valuable regional hadith collections. His breadth of source material is extraordinary even by the standards of a field where comprehensive coverage was expected.
Ibn Hajar is particularly attentive to the problem of name confusion — a significant issue in companion biography given the limited naming conventions of early Islamic culture, where a small number of common names were borne by many different individuals. His careful tracking of name variants and his systematic distinction between homonymous individuals represents some of the most refined philological and historical analysis in classical Islamic scholarship.
He also addresses the methodological question of what constitutes sufficient evidence for companion status. This involves judgments about the reliability of transmitters, the plausibility of claimed connections, and the consistency of different accounts. Ibn Hajar's judgments on these questions drew on his unparalleled mastery of the hadith transmission literature and his ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of specific chains of evidence.
Al-Isabah's status as the final and most comprehensive treatment of companion biography rests on this combination: comprehensive coverage, precise classification, consistent format, and rigorous evaluation. No subsequent work has matched its synthesis of breadth and depth.
