المحتوى الفقهي والأخلاقي والتاريخي
The legal material in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, when extracted through thematic indexing, covers the full range of Islamic jurisprudence including commercial transactions, family law, criminal law, and the regulations governing various social obligations. At-Tabarani's broad collection standard means that the legal hadiths in the Mu'jam span a wider range of authenticity than those in the canonical collections, but the genuine legal traditions among them have been an important resource for jurists seeking to locate supporting evidence across different Companion chains.
The ethical and character-related traditions in the Mu'jam are plentiful, drawing on the full diversity of Companion transmission. Traditions on truthfulness, generosity, patience, gratitude, and the proper treatment of family and neighbors appear through dozens of Companion chains, and the most reliable of these have been regularly cited in works of Islamic ethics and character education. The breadth of Companion attestation for core ethical teachings in the Mu'jam provides strong evidence for the deeply embedded nature of these values in the early Muslim community.
Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir is also a significant historical source. It contains traditions bearing on the biography of the Prophet, the history of the early Muslim community, the characteristics and accomplishments of specific Companions, and events in the period of the early caliphate. Many of these historical traditions are found only in the Mu'jam or appear in a more complete form there than in other collections, making it an important source for scholars working on the history of early Islam.
The biographical information embedded in the Mu'jam is particularly valuable. Since at-Tabarani organized his work around Companions, each section necessarily contains some information about the Companion in question — who they were, where they lived, what role they played in early Islamic history, and which traditions they are known to have transmitted. This embedded biographical information, when combined with the chains and the traditions themselves, makes the Mu'jam a kind of biographical encyclopedia of the Companions alongside its primary function as a hadith collection.
