A compilation of the fundamental legal maxims upon which Islamic jurisprudence is built. The five universal maxims are: actions are judged by intentions; certainty is not overruled by doubt; hardship brings ease; harm must be removed; and custom is given legal consideration. These maxims, distilled from thousands of individual rulings, allow scholars to derive new rulings for unprecedented situations while maintaining consistency with the spirit of the Shariah.
