فضائل القرآن وحامليه
Al-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Quran (The Clarification of the Etiquette of the Bearers of the Quran) is a dedicated treatise by Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631–676 AH / 1233–1277 CE), the great Shafi'i jurist and hadith scholar whose works continue to serve as foundational references across the major disciplines of Islamic learning. This relatively short but carefully organized book addresses a subject that occupied Imam al-Nawawi deeply: the proper conduct of those who dedicate themselves to reciting, memorizing, teaching, and transmitting the Quran. It is a work of adab — Islamic ethical refinement — applied specifically to the most honored of Islamic sciences.
Al-Nawawi begins from the premise that the Quran is the speech of Allah and that those who carry it — whether in memory, in recitation, or in the chains of transmission — bear a responsibility commensurate with its dignity. The book is therefore not merely a collection of etiquettes in the sense of social manners; it is a spiritual and scholarly guide for how a Muslim should orient his entire relationship to the Quran. Topics include the inner states a reciter should cultivate, the physical and ritual conditions appropriate for recitation, the etiquette of the teacher and student of the Quran, the proper handling of the physical mushaf, and the conduct expected of a Quran teacher toward his students and community.
Among the most valuable sections of the work is al-Nawawi's discussion of the scholarly transmission of the Quran — the chain of teachers linking each generation back to the Companions who received it from the Prophet ﷺ. He emphasizes that the Quran is not merely a text to be read from a page but a living recitation to be received from qualified teachers, a principle that underlies the entire science of tajwid and qira'at. His treatment of this subject reflects both his expertise in hadith methodology — where the isnad (chain of transmission) is foundational — and his deep reverence for the Quran as a unique form of divine communication.
The book also addresses the social and communal dimensions of Quran teaching: how a teacher should conduct his circles of instruction, how students should behave in the presence of their teacher and the text, how differences in recitation should be handled with respect and knowledge, and how the Quran teacher should model the values the Quran teaches. Al-Nawawi draws on a rich body of hadith literature, athar (narrations) from the Companions, and the practice of the early generations to support his guidance, giving the work a solid textual foundation.
Al-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Quran occupies an honored place in the classical literature of Quranic sciences. It is frequently assigned in traditional Islamic institutions alongside texts of tajwid and tafsir, and its influence is visible in later works on the ethics of Quran learning. For any Muslim engaged in the study, memorization, or teaching of the Quran, al-Nawawi's guidance here represents a classical standard — one that balances outward correctness of recitation with inward reverence for the Book of Allah.
