Introduction to Al-Wala Wal-Bara: Loyalty and Disavowal in Islam — Part 1

A scholarly treatment of one of the most important principles in Islamic theology: al-wala' wal-bara' — loyalty to what Allah loves and disavowal of what He hates. This concept encompasses love for Allah, His Messenger, and the believers; and distance from shirk, kufr, and clear enemies of Islam. Originally a master's thesis at Umm al-Qura University in Makkah.

Part 1 establishes the theological foundations: the meaning of the declaration of faith (Shahadah), what negates Islam, the relationship between al-wala' wal-bara' and true faith, and the Quranic and prophetic evidences for this principle. The author distinguishes between the principle itself — which is obligatory — and its misapplication by extremists who use it to justify violence or hatred of all non-Muslims.

This is a work of academic Islamic theology, not a call to hostility. It explains how a Muslim can maintain their Islamic identity, love their Muslim brothers and sisters, avoid befriending the enemies of Islam in their enmity toward it, while still dealing justly with all people.
