الاستقبال العلمي وقيمته لطلاب الحديث
Awn al-Ma'bud has been recognized across the Muslim scholarly world as the most comprehensive and reliable commentary on Sunan Abi Dawud available in print. Its reception reflects the wide respect accorded to the Indian hadith tradition, particularly by scholars who appreciated the combination of rigorous hadith methodology with sophisticated jurisprudential analysis.
In India and Pakistan, the commentary became a standard reference in the major hadith institutions, used both in teaching and private research. Its availability in printed form — beginning with the first major edition and continuing through multiple reprints by Egyptian and Beirut publishers — brought it to scholars across the Arab world who had previously relied on manuscript sources or partial studies of Abu Dawud's Sunan.
Scholars such as Muhammad Nasir ad-Din al-Albani, despite differing from al-Azimabadi on specific hadith gradings and jurisprudential positions, acknowledged the work's value as a reference. Al-Albani's own Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud and Da'if Sunan Abi Dawud can be read alongside Awn al-Ma'bud to good effect: al-Albani provides updated grading based on the full range of available narrations, while al-Azimabadi provides the jurisprudential context and historical commentary that al-Albani's works do not offer.
For students of hadith, Awn al-Ma'bud serves several important functions. It introduces them to the methodology of hadith commentary by demonstration rather than abstract explanation. It provides ready access to the opinions of the major hadith critics and biographers without requiring the student to consult a dozen separate works. And it situates each hadith within its jurisprudential context, helping the student understand why particular narrations were controversial and what was at stake in debates over their authenticity or interpretation.
The commentary also rewards more advanced students who approach it alongside the primary sources al-Azimabadi cites. Following his references to al-Mizzi, Ibn Hajar, and adh-Dhahabi and checking them in their original works develops the critical reading skills necessary for independent hadith research. In this way, Awn al-Ma'bud functions not only as a reference but as a model for how comprehensive hadith commentary is conducted.
