Introduction to Description of Paradise

A brief but evocative description of Paradise drawn from Quranic verses and authentic hadith, by Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah. Paradise (al-Jannah) is the ultimate goal of the believer — a realm of eternal bliss that Allah has prepared for those who obey Him and follow His Messenger.

The text describes the rivers of water, milk, honey, and wine that flow through Paradise; the magnificent dwellings; the food and drink; the garments; the pleasure of beholding the face of Allah (the greatest pleasure of the people of Paradise); and the perpetual happiness of its inhabitants who will never know grief, illness, or death again.

Allah says: "No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do." (32:17). This reminder of Paradise is one of the most powerful motivations for Islamic practice — the Prophet said: "Paradise is surrounded by hardships, and Hellfire is surrounded by desires." May Allah make us among the people of Paradise.
