Introduction to The Four Foundations of Shirk

One of the most important short treatises in Islamic theology, by the Arabian reformer Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. This text identifies the four foundational errors in thinking that led the polytheists of all eras to associate partners with Allah, and explains how each foundation is refuted by the Quran and Sunnah.

The four foundations are: (1) claiming that the objects of worship are only means to draw closer to Allah; (2) claiming precedent from earlier generations for these practices; (3) having sincere good intention while practicing shirk; and (4) the argument that one's scholars and leaders permitted it. Ibn Abd al-Wahhab shows from the Quran that the Prophet Muhammad was sent precisely to refute each of these justifications, which were the same justifications used by the polytheists of Arabia.

This is a foundational text of the Salafi/Wahhabi reform movement, widely studied in Islamic institutions worldwide. Understanding the four foundations helps Muslims identify and avoid the subtle forms of shirk that can creep into religious practice when not anchored in pure Quranic monotheism.
