Introduction: Heartfelt Advice to a Dear Friend

مقدمة: نصيحة لصديق عزيز

Heartfelt Advice to a Dear Friend is one of the most intimate and direct works of Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (d. 751 AH / 1350 CE). Written in the form of personal counsel to a close companion, the book distills much of Ibn al-Qayyim's spiritual wisdom into a series of frank and loving pieces of advice for one who sincerely seeks to travel the path toward Allah.

The genre of nasiha — sincere counsel — has deep roots in the Islamic tradition. The Prophet ﷺ defined the entire religion in terms of advice: "The religion is nasiha (sincerity and counsel)." And the great Imam al-Shafi'i is reported to have said: "I have never given counsel to someone and wished for them to take it; counsel is a heavy burden, and the one who is advised has the right to accept or reject." Ibn al-Qayyim's counsel in this book is of the deepest kind: not surface admonition but the kind of advice that reaches the center of a person's priorities and relationship with Allah.

The topics addressed include: the primacy of seeking knowledge and acting on it; the danger of following the ego (nafs) and desire; the necessity of taking stock of oneself daily; the transformative power of remembrance (dhikr) of Allah; the importance of choosing righteous company; the relationship between gratitude and increase in blessings; the spiritual dangers of excessive speech and socializing; and the centrality of sincerity (ikhlas) as the foundation of all accepted worship.

Ibn al-Qayyim writes with a combination of scholarly depth and personal warmth that makes the advice feel less like a lecture and more like a conversation with a wise and caring friend who understands both the struggles of the human soul and the generosity of Allah who created it. This is a book to be read slowly, reflected upon, and returned to repeatedly.
