مغني المحتاج للخطيب الشربيني — الطهارة
Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Khatib ash-Shirbini al-Misri (d. 977 AH / 1570 CE) was a prominent Shafi'i scholar of Cairo in the tenth century AH, a contemporary of both Muhammad ar-Ramli and Ibn Hajar al-Haytami. His scholarly formation in Cairo placed him within the great Egyptian Shafi'i tradition, and his commentary on the Minhaj became one of the most important Shafi'i references of the classical period.
Mughni al-Muhtaj ila Ma'rifat Ma'ani Alfaz al-Minhaj — 'Enriching the Seeker in Knowing the Meanings of the Words of the Minhaj' — is ash-Shirbini's commentary on Al-Nawawi's Minhaj at-Talibin. Like the Tuhfah of al-Haytami and the Nihayah of ar-Ramli, it is a member of the major family of Shafi'i commentaries on the Minhaj that defined late classical Shafi'i jurisprudence. Mughni al-Muhtaj is generally regarded as the most accessible of the three major commentaries, valued for its clarity of expression and its ability to explain complex positions in language that students can follow more readily than the denser prose of the Tuhfah or the Nihayah.
The work is organized in four volumes in the standard printed editions and covers the full range of Islamic law from taharah through constitutional governance. Ash-Shirbini's explanatory style — clear, structured, and attentive to the needs of students who are learning the Shafi'i school for the first time at an advanced level — makes Mughni al-Muhtaj a preferred teaching text in some Shafi'i educational contexts.
One of the distinctive features of Mughni al-Muhtaj is its careful attention to the linguistic dimensions of the Minhaj's text. Ash-Shirbini was a master of Arabic language and frequently explains the precise meaning of Al-Nawawi's formulations, the grammatical structure of his sentences, and the lexical significance of the terms he chose. This attention to language reflects the classical principle that mastery of Arabic is a prerequisite for mastery of fiqh, since the law is expressed in a precise technical vocabulary that requires both linguistic and legal training to correctly understand.
Ash-Shirbini also authored Al-Iqna' fi Hall Alfaz Abi Shuja', a commentary on the popular Shafi'i primer Ghayat al-Ikhtisar by Abu Shuja' al-Isfahani, which became one of the most widely used commentary texts in Shafi'i education at the beginning intermediate level. His contributions to Shafi'i fiqh at both the entry intermediate and advanced levels demonstrate the breadth of his scholarly contribution.
