Introduction to Parables of the Quran

An analysis of the parables and examples (amthal) found in the Quran, by the great Hanbali scholar Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah — student of Ibn Taymiyyah and one of the most prolific Islamic authors of the eighth century AH. This work demonstrates the rhetorical and theological genius of Quranic expression through its use of comparison and illustration.

Allah says in the Quran: "And We have certainly presented for the people in this Quran from every kind of example" (30:58). Ibn al-Qayyim explores these parables: the parable of the one who spends in Allah's cause and the multiplication of reward, the parable of the disbeliever's deeds like ashes scattered by wind, the parable of the hypocrite who lights a fire only to have it extinguished, and many others.

The author shows how these parables contain profound theological, ethical, and spiritual wisdom — making abstract truths vivid and memorable. This work deepens appreciation for the linguistic and conceptual richness of Quranic revelation and aids in Quranic contemplation (tadabbur).
