"The gardens of pleasure await those who fear their Lord." (Al-Ma'arij 70:38). "That is for whoever has feared the standing before his Lord and restrained himself from desires." (Al-Nazi'at 79:40-41). These verses establish fear of Allah as both a spiritual station and the motivation for the disciplined conduct that leads to paradise.

Ibn al-Qayyim's approach — as in all his spiritual works — is psychological as well as theological. He analyzes the different ranks (darajat) of fear: from the fear that merely prevents major sins, to the fear that prevents minor sins and doubtful matters, to the exalted fear of those whose hearts are so saturated with consciousness of Allah that every breath is taken in His name. He also explains the relationship between fear and love: that true fear of Allah comes from knowing Him, and that knowing Him — His attributes of power, knowledge, justice, and wisdom — naturally produces love as well as awe.
