الإرث والأثر في الدراسات الإسلامية الحديثة
Ruh al-Ma'ani holds a position of particular importance in the tafsir tradition as the last great comprehensive Sunni tafsir of the pre-modern period. Composed in the nineteenth century, it stands at the threshold between the classical tradition and the modern era, synthesizing centuries of scholarship while remaining within the methodological framework of traditional tafsir.
Al-Alusi's son Nu'man Khayr ad-Din al-Alusi also became a scholar of note and continued aspects of his father's intellectual tradition. The Alusi family name remained associated with Baghdad scholarship through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century, representing a scholarly dynasty within the Ottoman Arab world.
For subsequent scholars working in the Arabic-speaking world, Ruh al-Ma'ani became an indispensable reference. Sayyid Qutb, whose Fi Zilal al-Quran (In the Shade of the Quran) became one of the most widely read modern Quran commentaries, was aware of and referenced classical tafsir works including al-Alusi's. Scholars at Al-Azhar and in the wider Arab scholarly world who sought the most comprehensive available compilation of classical tafsir analysis consistently turned to Ruh al-Ma'ani.
The work is also significant for the history of Islamic thought in the nineteenth century — a period of intense tension between traditional scholarship and reformist movements. Al-Alusi's synthesis of Sufi, Maturidi, and broadly Sunni scholarship represents one response to this era: not radical reform, but comprehensive integration of the tradition's resources.
Modern critical scholars of Islamic studies have used Ruh al-Ma'ani as a primary source for understanding how the classical tafsir tradition was received and transmitted in the nineteenth century. Its comprehensive engagement with prior works makes it, among other things, an invaluable index to the state of the tafsir tradition as al-Alusi encountered it. The standard modern edition, published in multiple volumes by Dar Ihya al-Turath al-Arabi and available in major digital repositories, has made the work accessible to contemporary researchers worldwide, ensuring that this last great monument of pre-modern Sunni tafsir remains a living reference for students and scholars engaging with the classical Islamic commentary tradition.
