كيفية عمل السحر وأعراضه
Understanding how magic operates and how to recognize its symptoms is essential for those who may be affected and for those called upon to assist them. Wahid Abdussalam Bali draws upon both the Islamic scholarly tradition and extensive practical experience to provide a detailed account of the mechanics of magic and the various symptom profiles associated with different types of magical affliction.
Islamic scholars have identified several categories of magic distinguished by their intended effects and the means used to achieve them. Love magic (sihr al-mahabbah) is intended to create excessive, unnatural attachment — compelling a person to love or desire someone against their natural inclinations. Separation magic (sihr al-tafriq) is intended to create enmity and estrangement between people who are naturally close — most commonly between husband and wife, for which the Quran provides specific warning. Harm magic (sihr al-adha) is intended to cause physical or psychological illness. Obstruction magic (sihr al-hasr) is intended to prevent a person from achieving specific goals — causing a businessman to fail in trade, a man to be unable to consummate marriage, or a woman to be unable to conceive.
Bali discusses the common physical objects used as vehicles for magic: knots (which are specifically mentioned in the Quran as a medium for magic in Surat al-Falaq — 'from the evil of those who blow on knots'), written scripts or amulets containing blasphemous or polytheistic content, food and drink into which substances have been introduced, and items belonging to the target person (hair, nail clippings, clothing) used in conjunction with spells. The physical medium serves as a point of connection through which the jinn employed by the magician can access and affect the target.
The symptoms of magical affliction are varied and can be misdiagnosed as psychiatric or medical conditions by those unfamiliar with their Islamic interpretation. General symptoms that may indicate magical affliction include: sudden, inexplicable changes in personality or behavior; recurring nightmares, particularly involving frightening creatures or falling from heights; persistent, treatment-resistant depression or anxiety; hearing voices or experiencing hallucinations; sudden unexplained aversion to a spouse or close family member that contradicts the person's previous feelings; inability to consummate marriage or conceive children without medical explanation; inexplicable failures in business or professional life after previous success; and physical symptoms (pain, paralysis, difficulty breathing) that medical examination cannot explain.
The specific symptom profiles associated with different types of magic help in both diagnosis and treatment. Love magic typically manifests as obsessive thoughts about a specific person, inability to sleep or concentrate, extreme mood swings related to the target person, and sometimes physical symptoms like heart palpitations or insomnia. Separation magic typically manifests as sudden unexplained aversion, exaggerated perception of flaws, inability to tolerate proximity to a previously beloved person, and recurring dreams of conflict or separation. Harm magic may manifest as any variety of physical or mental symptoms depending on the specific intention of the spell.
Bali is careful to note that Islamic diagnosis of magic should not replace medical investigation. Many of the symptoms he describes are also produced by genuine medical and psychiatric conditions, and a practitioner of ruqyah (Quranic healing) who dismisses medical causes too hastily does a disservice to those they aim to help. The responsible approach is to pursue both medical investigation and spiritual treatment simultaneously, recognizing that some conditions have purely physical causes, some have spiritual causes, and some involve both. The Islamic framework provides tools for addressing the spiritual dimension of illness that conventional medicine does not.
