الحماية بالقرآن والسنة
The Islamic tradition provides the believer with a comprehensive armory of spiritual protection against the harmful jinn and the devices of Shaytan. These protections — drawn from the Quran and the authenticated Sunnah — are not mere symbolic gestures but genuine spiritual tools whose effectiveness has been experienced by believers across fourteen centuries and whose divine authorization makes them inherently superior to any human or jinn-based protective measure.
The single most powerful protection is the regular recitation of Ayat al-Kursi — the Throne Verse (2:255). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told his Companions that reciting Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping protects the reciter throughout the night, with Allah appointing an angel to guard them. He described this verse as the greatest verse in the Quran — and its content explains why it provides such protection: it is a comprehensive declaration of Allah's absolute sovereignty, omniscience, and power over all of creation, including the jinn. A being who holds these divine qualities present in their consciousness has no space left for the jinn's whispers and deceptions.
The regular recitation of the last two surahs of the Quran — al-Falaq and an-Nas (the Mu'awwidhatan) — provides specific protection against the precise categories of harm associated with the jinn. Al-Falaq seeks refuge from the evil of all created things, the evil of the darkness when it settles, the evil of those who blow on knots (i.e., sorcerers), and the evil of the envier when they envy. An-Nas seeks refuge from the whispering devil — 'the one who whispers in the breasts of mankind — from among the jinn and mankind.' The Prophet recommended reciting these surahs three times each morning and evening, and before sleep, as a comprehensive protective routine.
Surah al-Baqarah as a whole is described in the hadith as providing such powerful protection that Shaytan flees from the house in which it is regularly recited. The Prophet said: 'Do not make your houses graves. Indeed, Shaytan does not enter the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited.' This recommendation is easily implemented through regular Quran recitation sessions at home or through listening to recorded recitations, and its spiritual benefit — the expulsion of malevolent jinn from the household — is of enormous practical significance for the Muslim family.
The prescribed morning and evening adhkar — the collection of Prophetic remembrances recommended for morning (after Fajr) and evening (after Asr) — constitute a daily protective routine of great comprehensiveness. These include specific formulas for seeking Allah's refuge from Shaytan, from the evil of all created things, from illness, from the punishment of the grave, and from every category of harm. The Muslim who observes these adhkar consistently surrounds themselves with a spiritual shield woven from Quranic ayat and Prophetic words that provides comprehensive protection throughout the day and night.
Ruqyah — the practice of spiritual healing through the recitation of Quran and Prophetic supplications — is the Islamic answer to jinn possession, sorcery, and the evil eye. The Prophet himself performed ruqyah for ill Companions and encouraged the practice, saying: 'Present your ruqyah to me; there is nothing wrong with ruqyah as long as it does not involve shirk.' The permissible ruqyah consists exclusively of Quranic ayat and authenticated Prophetic supplications, recited by the healer or the patient themselves, accompanied by sincere trust in Allah as the one who truly heals. Ashour provides a practical guide to the ruqyah process for those seeking to protect themselves or their families from jinn-related harm, emphasizing that this practice, properly performed according to the Sunnah, is the only legitimate Islamic means of addressing such harm.
