أحاديث الأخلاق والآداب والمواضيع الروحية
Jami' Al-Tirmidhi contains extensive sections on ethics, manners (adab), and spiritual topics that are among the most beloved in the collection. Al-Tirmidhi was particularly attentive to the ethical and spiritual dimensions of the prophetic teaching, and his collection is correspondingly rich in these areas. Al-Mubarakpuri's commentary on these sections brings out their depth with careful explication.
The book of manners (Kitab al-Adab) in Al-Tirmidhi's Jami' contains hadiths on a comprehensive range of social etiquette: the proper forms of greeting, the etiquette of sneezing and yawning, the rights of the road, the proper treatment of animals, and hundreds of specific guidance points about daily social life. Al-Mubarakpuri explains each hadith's meaning and notes the legal position derived from it — whether obligatory, recommended, or merely permitted — while tracing the chain quality.
The sections on spiritual topics — the hardening and softening of the heart, asceticism (zuhd) toward worldly possessions, and the spiritual merits of various acts of worship — are among the most widely cited portions of the Jami'. Al-Mubarakpuri's commentary on these hadiths reflects both scholarly precision and spiritual appreciation, explaining the meanings carefully while conveying the transformative intent of the prophetic teaching.
Al-Tirmidhi's sections on the merits of the Quran (fada'il al-Quran) and on supplications (da'awat) receive careful treatment in the Tuhfah. Al-Mubarakpuri explains the hadiths about reciting specific surahs and their rewards, noting where these hadiths are well authenticated and where they are weaker, while presenting the scholars' positions on how to treat hadiths of different quality in the context of Quranic practice.
The eschatological sections of the Jami' — hadiths about the signs of the Hour, the conditions in the grave, the Day of Resurrection, paradise and hellfire — are treated by al-Mubarakpuri with particular care in matters of belief. He presents the mainstream Sunni approach to understanding these hadiths: accepting their meanings while not going into unnecessary detailed speculation about the nature of what is described.
