English Translation

It was narrated from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a woman among the Jews menstruated, they would not eat with her, would not drink with her, would expel her from the house, and she would not be with them in the houses. The Prophet ﷺ was asked about this, and Allah, the Exalted, revealed: "They ask you about menstruation. Say: It is harm" [Al-Baqarah: 222]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to eat with them, drink with them, have them in the houses, and do everything except intercourse. The Jews said: 'This man does not want to leave anything of our practice without opposing us in it.' 'Abbad ibn Bishr and Usayd ibn Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about this, saying: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not then have intercourse with them during menstruation?' The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed greatly until we thought he was angry with them. They stood and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent after them to bring them back and gave them a gift of milk to drink, and we knew he had not been angry with them.
