أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَشْعَثُ ، عَنْ الشَّعْب

ِيِّ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ ، وَعَلِيٍّ ، وَزَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَدْ ذَكَرَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ أَيْضًا : أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا :" الْوَلَاءُ لِلْكُبْرِ. يَعْنُونَ بِالْكُبْرِ : مَا كَانَ أَقْرَبَ بِأَبٍ أَوْ أُمٍّ "

English Translation
It was narrated from al-Sha'bi, from Umar, Ali, Zayd, and — he thinks — also from Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them all), that they said: 'The right of walaa' (patronship) belongs to the eldest (al-kubr).' By al-kubr they meant whoever was closest through a father or mother.
