English Translation
It was narrated from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "The parable of the one given faith but not the Quran is like the date — its taste is good but it has no fragrance. The parable of the one given the Quran but not faith is like the fragrant myrtle — its fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. The parable of the one given both the Quran and faith is like the citron — its fragrance is good and its taste is good. The parable of the one given neither faith nor the Quran is like the colocynth — its odor is foul and its taste is foul."
