Hadith #204

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ خَرَجَ عَلِيٌّ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ فَقَالُوا كَيْفَ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا أَبَا حَسَنٍ فَقَالَ أَصْبَحَ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ بَارِئًا فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ أَلَا تَرَى إِنِّي لَأَرَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ
وَسَلَّمَ سَيُتَوَفَّى مِنْ وَجَعِهِ وَإِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ الْمَوْتَ فَانْطَلِقْ بِنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلْنُكَلِّمْهُ فَإِنْ كَانَ الْأَمْرُ فِينَا بَيَّنَهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي غَيْرِنَا كَلَّمْنَاهُ وَأَوْصَى بِنَا فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ إِنْ قَالَ الْأَمْرُ فِي غَيْرِنَا فَلَمْ يُعْطِنَاهُ النَّاسُ أَبَدًا وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَا أُكَلِّمُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي هَذَا أَبَدًا

English Translation
Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from 'Abdullah ibn Ka'b, from Ibn 'Abbas رضي الله عنهما who said: 'Ali came out from the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his final illness, and the people said: O Abu al-Hasan, how is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ this morning? He said: He has recovered by the grace of Allah, praise be to Allah. Al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib took Ali by the hand and said: By Allah, in three days you will be the servant of the staff. By Allah, I think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will pass away from this illness. I know the faces of the sons of 'Abd al-Muttalib when they are dying. So let us go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him about this matter. If it is for us, we will know, and if it is for other than us, we will ask him to advise the people regarding us. 'Ali said: By Allah, if we ask him for it and he refuses, the people will never give it to us. By Allah, I will not ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for it.'
