English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Mujahid — that he said: 'I entered upon Ibn 'Abbas and said: "O Abu 'Abbas, I was with Ibn 'Umar and he recited this verse and wept." He said: "Which verse?" I said: "If you reveal what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it" [2:284]. Ibn 'Abbas said: "When this verse was revealed, it greatly distressed and troubled the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are ruined — if we are held accountable for what we say, what we do, and what is in our hearts, and yet our hearts are not in our control!" the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told them: "Say: 'We hear and we obey.'" Then this verse abrogated it: "The Messenger believes in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and the believers... Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear — it will have what [good] it has earned, and it will bear what [evil] it has earned" [2:285-286]. So [the Companions] were pardoned for inner thoughts and held accountable only for their [outward] deeds."'
