حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ هُرْمُزَ قَالَ كَتَبَ نَجْدَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ
أَشْيَاءَ فَشَهِدْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ حِينَ قَرَأَ كِتَابَهُ وَحِينَ كَتَبَ جَوَابَهُ فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ إِنَّكَ سَأَلْتَنِي وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ وَسَأَلْتَ هَلْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْتُلُ مِنْ صِبْيَانِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ أَحَدًا وَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَقْتُلُ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا وَأَنْتَ فَلَا تَقْتُلْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ تَعْلَمُ مِنْهُمْ مَا عَلِمَ الْخَضِرُ مِنْ الْغُلَامِ حِينَ قَتَلَهُ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yazid ibn Hurmuz — that Najdah ibn 'Amir [the Kharijite] wrote to Ibn 'Abbas asking about various matters. He was present when Ibn 'Abbas read the letter and when he wrote his reply. Ibn 'Abbas wrote: '...You asked whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to kill any of the children of the polytheists — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not kill any of them. And you: do not kill any of them, unless you know about them what al-Khidr knew about the boy when he killed him.'
