English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Yazid ibn al-Asamm — that the dabb [spiny-tailed lizard] was mentioned in the presence of Ibn 'Abbas. One of those sitting with him said: 'It was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he neither declared it permissible nor forbidden.' [Ibn 'Abbas] said: 'What an evil thing you say! the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent only to declare things permissible and to forbid things. Umm Hufayd bint al-Harith came to visit her sister Maymunah bint al-Harith and brought food that included lizard [dabb] meat. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came after having had his evening drink. The food was presented and he was told: "There is lizard meat in it." He withdrew his hand. Those present with him ate it — and had it been forbidden, he would have prohibited them from it. He said: "It is not from my people's land, and I find myself averse to it."'
