حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ أَبِي الْحَكَمِ السُّلَمِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَتْ قُرَيْشٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُصْبِحْ لَنَا الصَّفَا ذَهَبَةً فَإِنْ أَصْبَحَتْ ذَهَبَةً اتَّبَعْنَاكَ وَعَرَفْنَا أَنَّ مَا قُلْتَ كَمَا قُلْتَ فَسَأَلَ رَبَّهُ عَزَّ
وَجَلَّ فَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَصْبَحَتْ لَهُمْ هَذِهِ الصَّفَا ذَهَبَةً فَمَنْ كَفَرَ مِنْهُمْ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ عَذَّبْتُهُ عَذَابًا لَا أُعَذِّبُهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ الْعَالَمِينَ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَتَحْنَا لَهُمْ أَبْوَابَ التَّوْبَةِ قَالَ يَا رَبِّ لَا بَلْ افْتَحْ لَهُمْ أَبْوَابَ التَّوْبَةِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via 'Imran Abu al-Hakam al-Sulami — that the Quraysh said to the Prophet ﷺ: 'Pray to your Lord to turn al-Safa into gold for us — if it becomes gold, we will follow you and know that what you have said is as you said.' He prayed to his Lord (عز وجل). Jibril came to him and said: 'If you wish, al-Safa will become gold for them — but then whoever among them disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment the like of which I have inflicted on no one in all creation. Or, if you wish, We will open for them the gates of repentance.' He said: 'O Lord, no — open for them the gates of repentance.'
