Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ أَنْبَأَنَا يُونُسُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ مِنْ تَاسِع
َةٍ فَأَصْبِحْ صَائِمًا قَالَ يُونُسُ فَأُنْبِئْتُ عَنْ الْحَكَمِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ أَكَذَاكَ صَامَ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ نَعَمْ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via al-Hakam ibn al-A'raj — that he said: 'I asked Ibn 'Abbas about the day of 'Ashura'. He said: 'When you see the crescent of Muharram, count — and when you reach the morning of the ninth, begin that day fasting.' Yunus said: 'I was then informed from al-Hakam that he said: I asked: Did Muhammad (ﷺ) fast it thus? He said: Yes.'
