Hadith #9
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا سُرَيْجٌ حَدَّثَنَا نُوحُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَالِكٍ النُّكْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْجَوْزَاءِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
كَانَتْ امْرَأَةٌ حَسْنَاءُ تُصَلِّي خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَكَانَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ يَسْتَقْدِمُ فِي الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ لِئَلَّا يَرَاهَا وَيَسْتَأْخِرُ بَعْضُهُمْ حَتَّى يَكُونَ فِي الصَّفِّ الْمُؤَخَّرِ فَإِذَا رَكَعَ نَظَرَ مِنْ تَحْتِ إِبْطَيْهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي شَأْنِهَا { وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ }

English Translation
Surayj narrated to us, Nuh ibn Qays narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Malik al-Nukri, from Abu al-Jawza', from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) who said: There was a beautiful woman who used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Some people would step forward to the first row so they would not see her, and others would stay behind so that when they bowed, they could look at her from under their arms. So Allah عز وجل revealed: 'And We have already known those who precede among you and We have already known those who lag behind' [al-Hijr 15:24].
