English Translation
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (رضي الله عنهما) — via Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik, from Abi 'Awana, from Husayn, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas, from his father — that Ibn 'Abbas narrated to him that he spent the night at the Prophet ﷺ's (ﷺ) [home]. [the Prophet ﷺ] woke during the night, took his miswak and used it, then performed wudu while reciting: 'Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth...' [3:190] — until he completed these verses to the end of the surah. Then he prayed two rak'ahs and prolonged the standing, bowing, and prostration in them. He then retired [to sleep] until I heard the breathing of sleep. Then he woke up, used the miswak, and performed wudu while reciting — and he did this three times in total. Then he prayed three rak'ahs of witr. Then Bilal the mu'adhdhin came and he went out to the prayer, saying: 'O Allah, place light in my heart, place light in my hearing, place light in my sight, place light before me and behind me, light to my right and to my left, light above me and below me. O Allah, grant me abundant light.'
