Send for him and forbid him. Abu Talib sent for him. There was room for one man near Abu Talib. Fearing that if the Prophet ﷺ came in to visit his uncle it might soften him toward him, [Abu Jahl] quickly sat in that spot. When the Prophet ﷺ entered, he found no place except near the door, and sat there. Abu Talib said: O son of my brother, your people are complaining about you — they claim you insult their gods and say such-and-such and do such-and-such. He said: O uncle, I only want them to accept one word — by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them jizyah. They said: What is it? Yes, by your father — ten times over! He said: La ilaha illallah. They stood up shaking their garments, saying: Has he made the gods into one god? This is indeed a strange thing [38:5]. He then continued reciting until he reached: They have not yet tasted My punishment [38:8].'
