English Translation

It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Mu'awiya, from al-A'mash, from 'Umara, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid — that 'Abdullah said: 'I was concealed behind the curtain of the Ka'bah when three men came — a Qurashi and his two Thaqafi brothers-in-law, or a Thaqafi and his two Qurashi brothers-in-law — with fat-filled bellies and little understanding in their hearts. They spoke words I did not hear [fully]. One of them said: Do you think Allah hears this conversation of ours? Another said: I think He hears when we raise our voices, but not when we do not raise them. The third said: If He hears any of it, He hears all of it. I mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ and Allah (عز وجل) revealed: And you were not concealing yourselves against your hearing, your sight, and your skins testifying against you [41:22] — to His words: That which you thought about your Lord has ruined you, and so you have become among the losers [41:23].'
