Hadith #216
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الْهَجَرِ
يُّ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ بِالطَّوَّافِ وَلَا بِالَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ التَّمْرَةُ وَلَا التَّمْرَتَانِ وَلَا اللُّقْمَةُ وَلَا اللُّقْمَتَانِ وَلَكِنْ الْمِسْكِينُ الْمُتَعَفِّفُ الَّذِي لَا يَسْأَلُ النَّاسَ شَيْئًا وَلَا يُفْطَنُ لَهُ فَيُتَصَدَّقَ عَلَيْهِ

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) — via Abu Mu'awiya, from Ibrahim ibn Muslim al-Hajari, from Abi al-Ahwas — that 'Abdullah said: 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The miskin [destitute person] is not the one who goes around [begging] — nor the one who is turned away by a date or two, or a morsel or two. Rather, the miskin is the self-restrained one who does not ask people for anything and is not noticed [as being in need] so that charity is given to him.'
